Keoladeo Ghana National Park

Pelicans, Keoladeo Ghana National Park

The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is strategically located just 7 kms away from the town of Bharatpur. This renowned park is spread over an area of 29 sq. kms of marshy land and is the nesting ground of hundreds of varieties of birds, including certain migratory birds which are on the verge of extinction.

History reveals that in the year 1938, attracted by the huge diversity of birds, Lord Linlithgo along with his entourage hunted a staggering 4273 birds in one single day.

In the days of yore, this sanctuary used to serve as the Maharaja's hunting ground. Although it was declared as a National Park in the year 1981, conservation activities at this renowned bird sanctuary was initiated way back in 1964 when India's numero uno birdman - Salim Ali took the initiative to stop bird hunting.

Inside the sanctuary, there is a lake which is where the birds can be seen frolicking in the waters. On a conservative estimate, 360 species of birds have been identified at the sanctuary. The Siberian Swans, the Fish Mongers, Storks, Dahuk, Sonajanga, Shamukkhol, White Crow, Red Crow, Pelicans and many types of sea birds are all very conspicuous by their presence. As far as Swans are concerned, nearby 80 varieties of them have been identified.

Winter is the best time to visit this sanctuary and one can marvel at the birds which come all the way from Siberia, Tibet, Afghanistan and China to take shelter inside the sanctuary for breeding. Apart from birds of other countries, nearly 120 species of wandering Indian birds too can be spotted at Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary.

Although Keoladeo is famous for birds and has been rightly been designated as a bird watcher's mecca, certain animal species like Indian Black Deer, Chittal, Nilgai, Wild Bears and Panthers too live here.

The best time for bird watching is either during s
unrise or during sunset. Boating facilities are available at the lake and one can really go up close to the birds and watch them frolicking with gay abandon.

Apart from bird-watching at Keoladeo, one may also visit the adjoining town of Bharatpur. There is the Lanhagarh fort and the Ayar Maharaja's palace. There is also a museum which has many types of arms and weapons, Arabic and Sanskrit manuscripts along with manuscripts belonging to the Kushan period. Other places worth visiting are the Lachmanji-Ka Mandir, Ganga Temple, the Nehru Park and Ganchi Park. Time permitting a visit to the 1905 built Golbagh Palace in the outskirts of Bharatpur can be a very rewarding experience.

Sariska National Park

Tiger, Sariska National ParkIn the days of yore, Sariska used to be the hunting ground of the Maharaja of Alwar. It was declared as a National Park in 1955. The park is spread over an area of 479 sq. Kms. and is divided into three zones - core, buffer and tourist zone. In 1979, Project Tiger initiative was launched in Sariska National Park.

Sariska National Park is teeming with wildlife and some of the resident species include sambhar, nilgai, wild cats, wild bear, chital, four horned antelopes and a variety of deer.

The central point of Sariska National Park is the Pandupole watch tower which is located 22 kms. inside the forest. The Pandupole area is believed to be an area where the Pandavas took shelter during their exile. A Hanuman Temple is located near the watch tower.

In Sariska not only can one marvel at the haunting wilderness but one can also add a bit of culture into one's safari. For instance, there is the Kankoyari fort, located 20 kms away from Pandupole where Mughal emperor Aurangzeb had kept his brother Dara Sikho as a captive prisoner. If one goes further ahead, there is the Nilkantha temple which is believed to be 1,500 year old.

Sariska National Park can be visited year round except during the rainy season (July/August) when the animals move to higher grounds. Sariska is possibly one of India's most renowned wildlife parks. A peculiar characteristic of the park is that one comes across a plethora of speed breakers both within and out side the park premises. They have been built in order to check the velocity of vehicles which otherwise have the habit of speeding down the tracks. There have been instances in the past when the speeding vehicles have over run the animals that strayed onto the track.

Sariska's topography is generally hilly. As one goes deeper inside the forest, the hills keep growing on you. As far as water bodies and wetland areas are concerned, they are few and far between. To mitigate these lacunae of water bodies, the park authorities have built artificial reservoirs at strategic places which provide welcome relief to the resident animals of Sariska during the scorching summer months.

Sariska's forest cover is of the dry deciduous variety. In the summer months, the forest cover gives way to the arid landscape while post-monsoon, the forest is conspicuous with its lush foliage. Of course, the rate in which the total forest cover of Sariska is depleting is a case for concern. Already the park authorities with the support of environmental NGO's are working together to educate the local tribes about the serious consequences of tree felling and the subsequent vanishing of the forest.

Apart from Pandupole watch tower, the park authorities have very cleverly built a number of hides which are concealed in a veil of secrecy surrounded as they are with dense foliage of the forest. Two well known hides are located in Kalighati and Salopka which provide excellent wildlife panorama.

Ranthambore National Park

Tiger, Ranthambore National ParkRanthambore National Park is one of the most popular National Parks in India. It was conferred the status of a National Park in the year 1957 and came under the ambit of "Project Tiger" in the year 1974. The park is strategically located in the midst of the imposing Aravalli and Vindhya mountain ranges covering an area of 400 sq. kms.

Of all the National Parks of India, Ranthambore is one of the most picturesque with the backdrop of an invincible fort located on a hill top while the park is spread in the foothills. The foliage is primarily of the dry deciduous kind interspersed with shimmering wetland areas which offer the resident wildlife species of the park with welcome relief especially during the sweltering summer months when the temperature hovers around 40° celsius.

Ranthambore came into prominence because of its burgeoning tiger population and in the mid 80's the tiger count stood at a healthy 40 plus which unfortunately is not the case anymore due to a number of reasons and poaching is one of them. One distinct advantage that tourists enjoy when they decide upon a safari holiday at Ranthambore is that the chances of sighting tigers at Ranthambore is very high in comparison to other National Parks because the quintessential Ranthambore tiger doesn't fear human beings which is not the case with tigers elsewhere.

Apart from tigers, Ranthambore National Park is home to a bewildering variety of animal species like Leopards, Striped Hyenas, Sambar, Chinkara, Black Bucks, Macaques, Langurs, Squirrels, Rufoustailed Hare, Small Indian Civets, Wild Cats to name just a few of the resident species that have made Ranthambore their home. The reptile species is no less varied with Indian Chameleon, Indian Python, King Cobra, Desert Monitor Lizard, Vipers to name just a few.

Apart from game viewing, Ranthambore with its plethora of reservoirs and wetland areas offers excellent breeding ground for a large variety of avian species. In fact both resident and migratory birds are known to flock in Ranthambore's wetlands and according to the latest bird count of WWF, a staggering 272 species of birds have been identified.

As far as water bodies are concerned, Ranthambore has three principal lakes - Padam, Rajbag and Malik Talao of which the Rajbagh Talao is the most scenic. The charm of Malik Talao is largely due to the ruins along its boundaries. A bit of record and you have India's third largest banyan tree inside the park premises. It is indeed gigantic and wow! there are monkeys galore. So you better be aware.

Ranthambore is not only about wildlife. There is a fair bit of history and legend too that somehow makes a heady cocktail of a safari viz-a-viz the impregnable Chauhan Fort which is strategically located at a height of 215 meter. One has to climb a flight of stairs to reach the fort.

This magnificent fort has seen the rise and fall of many dynasties. Some of the erstwhile rulers who had the opportunity to seize this invincible fort are Aurangzeb, Vir Hamir, Allaudin Khilji and Akbar. One has to enter the fort through a big door (darwaja). It is really big. Even though the fort is now wrecked and derelict, the towers and domes along with the exquisite Rani Mahal which is inside the fort all evokes with the grandeur of a rich past.

Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort, ChittorgarhThe magnificent Chittorgarh fort located 175 kms. east of Udaipur is dedicated to Chitrangad Maurya Bappa Rawal who was the founder of the Sisodia dynasty. The fort is spread over 700 acres and houses regal palaces, temples and towers. This fort is rated as the foremost in embattlement tactics and is among the most impregnable forts ever built by the Rajputs.

The Chittorgarh fort rises like a mirage from the adjoining plains underneath and stands like a sentinel at a height of 180 meters. One has to cross several gates to reach Rampal which is the entry point to this impregnable fort. Legend has it that when Mughal emperor Akbar laid seize to the fort, two great Rajput warriors - Jaimull and Kulla fought till the last breath of their lives and in memory of the brave sons of the soil, two exquisite cenotaphs have been built within the ramparts.

The fort has several majestic palaces, each one more beautiful than the other. For instance the Rana Kumbha Palace, the Fateh Prakash Palace, Rani Padmini's Palace to name just a few of the palaces that are housed inside the fort all exemplify with the saga of gallantry, courage and heroism of the redoubtable Rajputs.

The fort's piece de resistance from a purely touristy point of view are the two magnificent towers - Kirti Stambh and the Vijay Stambh. Apart from the towers, there are numerous palaces, temples and tanks which were built during the period from 9th to 17th century. The huge reservoir is believed to have been used by princess Padmini for bathing prior to her self-immolation in honor of her husband. There is also the Gaumukh which is made of rocks and shaped very much like a cow's mouth from where water gushes out.

The Vijay Stambh in particular is amazing and is built on a pedestal which is all of 10ft high. From the base, Vijay Stambh is 122 ft in height and 30 ft wide. This colossal tower is nine storied and one has to climb 157 circular flight of steps to reach the top from where one can enjoy the incredible vistas of the city of Jodhpur.

History points out that Chittorgarh Fort was captured thrice. The first annexation was by Ala-ud-din-Khilji. The second was by Sultan Bahadur Shah and the last attack and subsequent annexation of Chittorgarh Fort was by Mughal emperor Akbar who completely demolished the fort and reduced it into wreckage.

Amer Fort

Amer Fort, JaipurThis magnificent fort was built not by one but three rulers - Raja Man Singh initiated the project. Mirza Raja Jai Singh took over the cudgels from Raja Man Singh and the finishing touches were given by Sawai Jai Singh. This colossal fort took as long as two centuries to build, the major portion of the work was carried out in the 1500's.

The Amer Fort stands like a sentinel above the still waters of the Maotha Lake. The fort is a living testimony where the Hindu and Mughal architectural styles have merged in complete harmony to create a masterpiece of fusion architecture. In the days of yore, the Amer Fort used to be a palace, an administrative headquarter as well as a strategic military bastion.

One of the best ways to reach this imposing fort is by an enchanting elephant ride. Once inside, the fort reveals its majestic grandeur like a veil slipping from the face of a beautiful woman replete with medieval courtyards, exquisite temples, enchanting pavilions and gardens that seems to be a replica of Eden on earth.

The interiors of the fort has an amazing array of painted engravings and its parapets are adorned with intricate mirror and stone works. The initial courtyard of the fort is flanked by two stupendous edifices - Diwan-E-Aam built of red sandstone and the marvelous Ganesh Pol Gate. Further ahead, an array of walkways beautifully surround an archetypal Mughal garden around which there is the Sukh Niwas and on the other side is the Jas Mandir. However, the centerpiece of attraction is the magnificent Sheesh Mahal which is replete with ornate mosaics, tinted mirror and glass embellishments all of which makes it a place of stunning beauty.

The Fort's in-house Kali temple popularly referred to as the Shila Devi Temple is shrouded in mystery. The temple is conspicuous by its awesome silver doors and silver lions.

There is also the Zenana or the Women's Palace which has exclusive enclosures or chambers that are linked by a general walkway. The zenana is shrewdly designed to provide utmost seclusion and solitude to the Maharaja's queens.

The Fort also has remnants of its rich past and the oldest of ruins dates back to the 16th century. The fort can be divided into four segments and there are two ways of reaching - one is by climbing the daunting flight of steps and the other is by riding on elephant back through the expansive passageway. The intriguing Jaleb Chowk is the central courtyard and in the days of yore the victorious royal armed forces were received and greeted here and presented their war booty to the general public.

The significance of the Marwar festival is that it is a celebration of the heroism, courage and gallantry of the erstwhile Rajput rulers.

The festival showcases the best of the art and culture of Jodhpur and the exotic Marwar region of Rajasthan. The enchanting Mehrangarh fort provides the ideal backdrop for the gala cultural programs and music recitals.

The Mehrangarh fort is built on a perpendicular hill and looking down from a height of about 100 meters, the fort appears rugged and impenetrable from outside but houses some of the most intricately carved panels and latticed windows. The cannons, placed strategically on the ramparts are well preserved and impressive. It is in the backdrop of such an amazing setting that the cultural programmes are held. Folk musicians of Jodhpur sing sentimental ballads eulogizing the valor and courage of the rulers of Marwar and paying tribute to them in the most befitting manner.

Apart from folk music, folk dance is also staged during the two day festivities. Renowned folk dancers of Jodhpur and Mandore perform amazing dance recitals which are impeccably choreographed bringing to life the legends and parables of this enchanting land of the Marwars.

Sixteen gigantic figures carved out of a single rock depicting popular Hindu and folk deities stand there in bright colors and are very well maintained. Needless to say, during the Marwar festival, this enchanting Marwar bastion springs to life with vibrant colors and the symphony of the folk music and dance which are essential ingredients of the festival.

Pushkar Festival

Pushkar FestivalEvery year on the occasion of Karthik Purnima, a fabulous 10 days fair - "Pushkar Fair" is held in the enchanting desert town of Pushkar. The fair is organized by the Government of Rajasthan and attracts the owners of camels, horses, cows, goats and sheep who come with their herds for trading.

Apart from trading in animals, particularly camels, the Pushkar Fair is also an occasion for celebration for the thousands of men, women and children who come from all the nooks and corners of Rajasthan to have a jolly good time. Men are conspicuous by their colorful turbans while the women folks are dressed to kill with their colorful ankle-length skirts and bejeweled from head to toe with traditional Rajasthani necklaces, waist bands, anklets and exotic ivory bangles.

The riot of colors is in sharp contrast to the desolate desert landscape. During the Pushkar Fair, the city of Pushkar becomes an open-air amphitheatre show casing the age-old culture and tradition of the simple village folks and the nomadic tribes of Rajasthan.

The first five days are exclusively meant for animal trading. The negotiations between the buyer and seller is a fascinating sight, whereby the seller rather skillfully enumerates the merits and intrinsic worth of the camel in question.

With the passage of time as the pace of trading slows down, and its time for celebration with the quintessential Camel Race being the piece de resistance. For the first time visitor, Pushkar Fair is like a fairy tale spectacle and the manner in which the camels are dressed up with colorful saddles, beads and cowries, it seems that in Rajasthan the Camels are style conscious. Prior to the camel race they are geared in all their finery and to make a fashion statement they are even applied with aromatic sweet scented perfumes.

As the D-day dawns (Karthik Poornima), there is a mad scramble at the bathing ghats for the ritual bathing in the holy waters of Lake Pushkar which is believed to cleanse oneself of all the sins. The waters of Lake Pushkar are also believed to rid the bather of skin ailments. Bathing over, its time for offering prayers and paying obeisance to the one and only - Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe.

In the evening as dusk descends on Pushkar, thousands of butter lamps are lighted atop delicate leaf boats, which are released in the tranquil waters of Lake Pushkar. The sight of thousands of flickering butter lamps makes for a truly ethereal sight and with it ends one of the world's most fascinating desert festivals.

As one wakes up early in the morning to the tinkle of the temple bells, hundreds of camels are seen marching along with their newfound masters to their new abode.
